15 Mostly used Social Media Apps & Sites in 2020

Best Social Media Apps & Sites

Social Media. The natural enemy of being productive and the best buddy of procrastination. In today’s world, there are so many social media sites, but here we’ll have a look at the most used and highly rated social media sites/apps available in the U.S.A.

Here are the most used Social Media Sites :

YouTube

youtube Social Site

Rating: 4.2 (Play Store.)

Unsurprisingly, YouTube is the #1 social media. It’s a black hole once you are into it, no one can escape it (not literally!); Until or unless you exhaust your data limit. Most of us have used it whether it’s to watch back to back videos for entertainment or learning something like repairing a PC or trying out good recipes from YouTube.

It’s huge, after Google, YouTube is the second biggest search engine. The founders of YouTube, who were the ex-employees of PayPal. Their original idea for YouTube was for a video dating site but they changed their route, I’m not complaining.

Most YouTube views come from the U.S. When it came into existence no one would have thought that it would go this big. It was founded in 2015, and the very next year google bought it as it understood the potential of this video sharing website.

It sounds crazy but 500 hours of videos are uploaded every single minute and it will take 60,000 years of nonstop watching to watch all of them. There’s always something new and interesting you can find there.

Other than YouTube it is also the best place if you wish to sell or showcase your skills for money! You must know famous YouTubers like PewDiePie who have a net worth of over 1 million due to YouTube.

Facebook

Rating: 4.2 (Play Store.)

Facebook needs no introduction because the majority of us know pretty well about it even if we don’t use it. Facebook is the 2nd best (you might disagree) social media site anywhere in the world and on average, 1.73 billion people use Facebook on a daily basis (Dang! Y’all crazy about it). I often wondered why people constantly used Facebook but I guess that is because it has been designed to keep us hooked.

Facebook has so much interesting content and with new content uploaded every minute, Facebook can easily keep us occupied for hours and hours. These days Facebook is used for almost everything; you wanna find a local date?

FB it, looking for a new crib? FB we’ll help you out, looking to sell something? FB got you covered, looking for a job? FB search it. As you can see, you can do almost everything with FB and in this digital era, this comes handy either to make money or get away from reality.

Apparently, there’s an unspoken tradition on FB that only adults know. If you haven’t had any FB ban, you haven’t lived yet. That and having multiple accounts (the Author has lost 3 accounts to FB bans).

Instagram

Rating: 4.5 (Play Store.)

Up next have Instagram, another app that is widely used across the continents. On average, Instagram sees around 500 million users per day. Between Facebook and Instagram, I daresay that Instagram is most preferred, especially by the ladies because of selfies!!! (Yuck!) (No offense).

Instagram is like a simplified version of Facebook, you can easily get sucked into mindless scrolling because it allows you to share pictures and videos from your daily lives, by using Ig filter and short stories to make your profile further interesting.

Instagram can be used for so many things, for example. You can always stalk your friends (read: crash) profile or check out the daily lives of your favorite celebrities.

Don’t mind me saying but here people try hard to make themselves look more creative, aesthetic, and sophisticated. People’s obsession with mobile photography is one of the reasons for making it trendy.

Facebook bought Instagram in 2012, a smart move as now Instagram is seen as one of the most profitable businesses. But it’s not just that, today several companies use Instagram for their business too. They use Instagram for promoting their brands and succeeding.

Twitter

Twitter Social Site

Rating: 4.5 (Play Store.)

After YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram; Twitter might be easily the most popular site/app in the U.S.A with 64.2 million monthly users (330 million active monthly users.)

Twitter is a microblogging site where you can write only in 240 characters, hard stuff eh? It was founded in 2006 by Jack Dorsey (The most humble man I’ve ever heard of), Noah Glass, Biz Stone, and Evan Williams. I’ve often heard that people don’t understand Twitter and that it doesn’t make sense, that’s understandable as I was the same. Twitter is too different from any of the apps in the world; it is unique and that’s a rarity.

According to Dorsey’s explanation, Twitter was derived from the short burst and inconsequential information and obviously the chirping of the birds. Which is why a single post and messages are called Tweets.

Finding fame on twitter is hard but not that hard if you’re funny and can keep it short and unlike what the majority think, Twitter is quite good for business too. People often say that Twitter is dying, but that’s not true.

Snapchat

Rating: 4.4 (Play Store.)

Lemme start with something I’ve heard a lot! “To see/watch more, buy my Snapchat premium!” This always annoys me. What sane person would spend money just to see someone else?

Anyways, Snapchat changed the way people communicate, as it’s a photo messaging app. Instead of telling you are out on a walk or chilling with buddies, you can send a snap of you walking or chilling, more real, right? Snapchat promotes face to face interaction and brings you closer to the other person.

But why will a self-conscious person love to share about his/her life? Snapchat is the only app where nothing is permanent. Whatever content you share, will disappear quickly. So you don’t have to think if the content you share is good enough or not. You can share your life with your friends and not feel the pressure of presenting yourself uniquely. 2.1 million snaps are sent per minute. (People got a lot to share after all)

Snapchat was launched in 2011. It was initially known as Picaboo. Snapchat filters are really fun and have one of the best filters and they keep on bringing new filters. If you are a goofy person like myself, you can click tons of embarrassing pics! With Snapchat,  you can turn your selfies into fine works of art too. Other than that they have many other features like stories, streaks, and snap scores.

Reddit

Reddit Social Site

Rating: 4.6 (Play Store.)

Behold! The true king of social media! Do You disagree? Download the app and then let’s see if you still disagree. Reddit is the true front page of the Internet and it constantly changes/updates, more than Facebook does; but unlike Facebook, you visit Reddit to be entertained instead of looking for something particular and this is what makes it dangerous.

Using Reddit is the same as switching on the TV where you don’t know what you’ll be watching but instead of a few channels, you have the entire Internet! In short, you’ll spend a year on Reddit before you realize that a year has already passed; Scary eh? But at least you’ll be entertained.

Also when I said it is constantly updated it wasn’t exaggerated, there’s a higher chance of knowing about major happenings across the world on Reddit than it is on the News or Facebook.

Reddit was founded in June 2005 and has one of the most unique interfaces. Posts in Reddit are managed using user-created boards called “subreddits” and these boards are divided into various subjects. if you think that only the posts are interesting, then you need to read Reddit comments.

LinkedIn

Rating: 4.3 (Play Store.)

LinkedIn is a social media platform, but with a professional touch. LinkedIn is where one can build a professional network by connecting with peers, clients, customers, or partners. But it’s much more than that, one can use it to find jobs, business opportunities, and people. Here you can connect with people of your dream companies.

LinkedIn can also be used for brand awareness as millions of professionals use LinkedIn. You can recruit, publish content, advertise, and form networks. Since 2003, LinkedIn has been helping people with their careers.

It’s like Facebook but for career-minded people, more popular with college students. You can connect with millionaires as there are about 41% of millionaires who use LinkedIn. (Pretty awesome, right?)

Skype

Skype Social App & Site

Rating: 4.3 (Play Store.)

Skype! Another bigwig and yet another site/app that has made our life significantly easier. Although as you already know, it is more of a telecommunications app than a social media site like the ones above.

Did you know that Skype was created in Sweden by Niklas Zennström and Janus Friis in August 2003? In 2005, eBay bought Skype for 2.5 billion in up-front cash! Later it sold 65% of Skype to Silver lake and therefore its value rose to 2.75 billion! In 2011 Microsoft stepped in and brought Skype for 8.5 billion! And started incorporating it into their products.

Today Skype is used in many Universities, and businesses as well as for simply calling a buddy across the globe due to its reliability. Sure FB and others have taken its limelight but Skype still stands tall with its incredible features like group video call and screen sharing (most used by the Corporates). Google Duo is another good app for video chatting but you won’t get any private messaging feature, so nope.

Tumblr

Tumblr Social Site

Rating: 4.3 (Play Store.)

Tumblr is another microblogging site similar to Twitter but a few years ago it suffered quite a backlash. Even then it is still one of the most popular social media sites in the U.S.A.

Unlike Twitter, Tumblr has a character limit of 500,000 characters, and this includes Texts, HTML tags, and spaces. Also unlike Twitter,

Tumblr has various features like:

  • Dashboard: where you can see, and share content. This can be also connected to Facebook to share your blogs.
  • Queue: Let’s set up a schedule to delay posts.
  • Tags: You already know about this.
  • HTML: this might be the best feature of Tumblr, HTML lets you control the appearance of your blogs. You can also use a custom domain name.

Honestly, Tumblr is great due to its content, but the app is a nightmare due to those pop-up ads. Wish they fix it or they’ll tear Tumblr apart.

WhatsApp

WhatsApp Social Site

Rating: 4.3 (Play Store.)

WhatsApp is an odd-ball, as the majority here is a social media site/app while WhatsApp is a Social media messaging service. The reason why WhatsApp has appeared here is due to its reliability.

I’ve tried so many messaging apps but nothing comes close to where WhatsApp stands. You might say Facebook Messenger is better but I’ll have to disagree, it can fail sometimes but WhatsApp never fails. It works decently even if you have a poor network.

The history of WhatsApp is quite funny. WhatsApp was founded in 2009 by Jan Kourn and Brian Acton, who were former employees of Yahoo, they had once tried to land at Facebook but they were rejected.

When they brought an iPhone they realized the potential of the app industry so they decided to develop something that’ll show statuses next to people. But it kept crashing and Acton decided to wait a few months before applying for another job.

By sheer luck, the same year the iPhone introduced push notifications. And they released WhatsApp 2.0. This version gained popularity bit by bit. In 2014 Facebook bought WhatsApp for whooping $19 Billion! And all the 55 employees of WhatsApp became instant millionaires.

Facebook made a few changes and now WhatsApp has around 2 billion active users! That’s more than any other messaging service. According to Mark Zuckerberg, WhatsApp is the only app that threatens Facebook’s messenger. Guess that was a nice payback to Mark Zuckerberg.

TikTok

TikTok Social Site

Rating: 4.4 (Play Store.)

Yuck! Nasty! I’ve never understood why this app is so darn famous. TikTok is a wannabe Snapchat but only with videos instead of Pics+videos. TikTok is owned by Chinese IT-company named ByteDance that was founded in 2012, it later merged with Musical.ly

With TikTok, people can create short dances, lip-sync, Talent, and comedy videos but the majority of videos on TikTok are just rubbish. People try too hard to impress, and there’s that “TikTok model” thingy, that really makes me want to go Samuel L Jackson. But not all of the content on TikTok is bad, few people post genuinely entertaining videos.

Discord

discord Social Site

Rating: 4.8 (Play Store.)

Discord! If you’re a gamer, definitely know and use this app for chatting with like-minded gamers. But Discord isn’t just for the gamers, it is also used for educational and business purposes.

The concept for discord was developed by Jason Citron who had also founded OpenFeint, a social gaming platform. He later sold it and developed Hammer and Chisel a game development studio, Jason Citron noticed how hard it was for his team to work out tactics in games using existing VoIP, which is why he developed Discord. Discord was founded in 2015 and quickly gained fame in eSports and LAN tournament gamers.

It recently changed its motto to “Chat for communities and friends” from “Chat for gamers”.

Final word:

There are so many noteworthy apps that I wished to add in this list but sadly I can’t. If I did you’ll have to spend a long time in this article. So I’ll just mention those here, in the end.

Noteworthy mentions.

  • Google Duo.
  • Facebook Messenger.
  • Google Messenger.

That’s all Y’all! Thanks for your patience:)
